On May 18, the first in-person session of PARLAMAZ since its reactivation in 2020 was held. The session took place at the headquarters of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in Brasília and included the participation of Ambassador Carlos França, Brazil’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. On the agenda was the institutionalization of PARLAMAZ within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, with the objective of ensuring the continuity of the Parliament, as well as a discussion on the challenges and opportunities of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15), featuring a presentation by Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Professor in the Department of Ecology at the University of Brasília (UnB).
The Brasília session also marked the beginning of the partnership and international technical cooperation between the ICCF Group (International Conservation Caucus Foundation) and the Amazon Parliament, whose 2021 work plan focused on knowledge exchange and strengthening the technical capacity of parliamentarians in areas of common interest, beginning with field visits to the Colombian Amazon region.
During the session, the “Joint Declaration on the Institutionalization of the Amazon Parliament within the Framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization” was approved.
