Integrated Fire Management Meeting in Washington, United States
Parliamentary dialogue event on the harmonization of legislation for Integrated Fire Management, with the objective of exchanging experiences, identifying common challenges, and exploring legislative opportunities to address the barriers arising from the lack of standardized fire management actions among countries. The session was moderated by the ICCF.

Visit to the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in Brasilia, Brazil
During the activities in Brasilia, the parliamentary delegations paid an institutional visit to ACTO, where they learned about the Amazon Regional Observatory and engaged in dialogue with ACTO’s Environment Coordination regarding the organization’s international cooperation agenda with the Amazonian countries.

Panel on the Bioeconomy in the Amazon at the Chamber of Deputies in Brasilia, Brazil
This meeting, coordinated by the Vice-President of Parlamaz in Brazil, Congresswoman Socorro Neri, represented the strengthening of regional multilateralism around the protection of the Amazon; the consolidation of a permanent legislative space for dialogue, monitoring, and the proposal of integrated public policies; and recognition of the importance of parliamentary action in addressing the climate crisis and defending the rights of Amazonian peoples. It constituted a concrete legacy of the Amazonian countries’ preparations for COP30, which will mark a new cycle of global climate commitments.

Ordinary Meeting of PARLAMAZ in Preparation for COP30 in Brasilia, Brazil
Another ordinary session of Parlamaz was held in Brasilia at a time considered strategic for coordination among the national and subnational parliaments of the Amazon region, in alignment with the climate commitments and targets to be discussed at the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), to be held in Belém, Brazil, in 2025.

PARLAMAZ Meeting on the Sidelines of the Amazon Summit in Bogotá, Colombia
The meeting brought together civil society representatives and parliamentarians to assess the Belém Declaration of 2023. Approximately 1,700 actions were identified, 70% of which were still at an initial stage.
The main points discussed included calls for climate finance, greater social and Indigenous participation, the institutional strengthening of ACTO, and preparations for COP30 on Climate Change. The parliamentarians also called for the formalization of Parlamaz, which, at that time, had no budget, permanent secretariat, or institutional structure.

The Parlamaz Board of Directors, composed of the vice-presidents of each delegation, met in Brasilia to receive an update from ACTO regarding the working group coordinated by the organization to examine the institutional relationship between Parlamaz and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty.

Visit to the Municipality of Chazuta, Peru
During the parliamentary activities in Peru, the parliamentary delegations had the opportunity to conduct a field visit to the municipality of Chazuta, where they visited the Cocoa Factory and learned about the community-based initiatives of the Chazuta Cultural Center. Invited participants included Ms. Vanessa Grazziotin, Executive Director of ACTO; Mr. Jaime Cavalier, from the International Conservation Caucus Foundation; Mr. Keith Alger, President of the Brazil Caucus Institute; Mr. Pietro Grazziani, from Amazonia+; and Professor Carlos Eduardo Young, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Ordinary Meeting of PARLAMAZ at the Congress of the Republic of Peru
Once again, the institutionalization of Parlamaz within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty was on the agenda, and bioeconomy was discussed as a strategic priority for the Amazon region. During the session, a new Vice-President representing Ecuador was elected, with Congresswoman Gissela Cecibel assuming the position.

PARLAMAZ at the Meeting of the Presidents of the Amazonian Countries in Belém, Pará, Brazil
Parlamaz was represented at the Meeting of the Presidents of the Amazonian Countries, where it reported on the progress of parliamentary engagement in the Amazon agenda and officially presented the “Declaration to the Heads of State of the Amazonian Countries,” which had been approved by Parlamaz during its Ordinary Session in April.
President Nelsinho Trad emphasized in both speeches that Parlamaz intends to serve as a mechanism for facilitating decision-making within the domestic legal systems of the countries; that it will provide a forum for discussing issues of relevance to the countries that encompass the Amazon territory; and, above all, that it will maintain synergy, in an advisory capacity, for the development and implementation of public policies in support of the Amazon agenda across the region.

PARLAMAZ on the Sidelines of the Summit of the Amazonian Countries in Belém, Pará, Brazil
Parliamentary participation was highly significant and was expanded to include state legislators who were attending the Summit meetings.
On the same day as the parliamentary session, the President, Senator Nelsinho Trad, was invited to present an overview of the activities of the Amazon Parliament at the meeting of foreign ministers, particularly regarding PARLAMAZ’s prospects for institutionalization.

PARLAMAZ Ordinary Meeting in Belém, Pará, Brazil
The meeting was held in Belém, in the state of Pará, which had been announced as the host city of the Summit of the Amazonian Countries. The agenda once again included the institutionalization of PARLAMAZ within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, the PARLAMAZ Declaration for the Summit of the Amazonian Countries, scheduled for August, as well as the review and approval of an official PARLAMAZ logo.

Seminar on Financing for the Amazon Region in Putumayo, Colombia
On November 10, an expanded seminar was held during which parliamentarians discussed the importance of financing for the Amazon region. They emphasized that such financing should not be limited to bilateral or binational arrangements, but should instead focus on the region and its interconnected biomes, under a governance model involving all eight countries. The parliamentarians also noted that PARLAMAZ must work extensively to help develop an environmental policy for the Amazon and an economic policy for this vast territory, its peoples, and their respective characteristics. They further highlighted the importance of ensuring that all stakeholders understand PARLAMAZ’s purpose, scope, and work.

Field Visit to the Colombian Amazon in Putumayo, Colombia
PARLAMAZ’s agenda in Colombia included the first technical cooperation activity carried out under a partnership involving PARLAMAZ, the International Conservation Caucus Foundation Group (ICCF Group), and the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes Program (ASL), implemented by the World Bank in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru.
On November 9, a field visit was conducted in the Colombian Amazon region of Putumayo, where parliamentarians had the opportunity to meet associations of chontaduro producers, an Amazonian palm fruit, as well as the Association of Young Rural Entrepreneurs of Villagarzón, with particular emphasis on the sustainable management of pirarucu fish.

PARLAMAZ Ordinary Meeting in Bogotá, Colombia
The agenda included the continuation of discussions on the institutionalization of PARLAMAZ within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty. Among the decisions adopted during the session, Representative Yenica Acosta was elected PARLAMAZ Vice-President for Colombia, and the Declaration on the International Day of the Amazon: September 5, proposed by the Bolivian delegation, was approved for subsequent submission to the United Nations system.

PARLAMAZ Ordinary Meeting in Brasília, Brazil
On May 18, PARLAMAZ held its first in-person session following its reactivation in 2020. The session took place at the headquarters of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) in Brasília and included the participation of Ambassador Carlos França, Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The agenda addressed the institutionalization of PARLAMAZ within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, with the aim of ensuring the Parliament’s continuity. It also included a discussion on the challenges and opportunities related to the fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, COP15, with the participation of Dr. Braulio Ferreira de Souza Dias, Professor at the Department of Ecology of the University of Brasília (UnB).
