The meeting was held in Belém, in the State of Pará, the city announced as the host of the Summit of the Amazonian Countries. Once again, the agenda included the institutionalization of PARLAMAZ within the framework of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty, the PARLAMAZ Declaration for the Summit of the Amazonian Countries, scheduled for August, as well as the review and approval of an official logo for PARLAMAZ.
The session was supported by and included the participation of the Governor of the State of Pará, Helder Barbalho; Ambassador Antonio Ricarte, appointed by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the official responsible for organizing the Summit; and the virtual participation of ACTO Secretary-General Alexandra Moreira.
Governor Helder Barbalho presented the state government’s proposals in the areas of infrastructure and the bioeconomy, with an emphasis on low-carbon agriculture, restoration units, and concessions of state-owned areas. He also spoke about the preparations underway for the city to host the Summit of the Presidents of the Amazonian Countries. ACTO Secretary-General Alexandra Moreira emphasized the importance of all national congresses working to strengthen parliamentary participation in PARLAMAZ, affirming that ACTO is committed to advancing the institutionalization of the Parliament.
During the session, the following Vice-Presidents were elected by country: Bolivia: Representative Carlos Hernan Arrien Cronembold; Brazil: Representative Socorro Neri; and Ecuador: Representative Mairuxi Sanchez.
The official PARLAMAZ logo (photo) and the “PARLAMAZ Declaration to the Heads of State of the Amazonian Countries” were approved.
International Cooperation: The Ordinary Meeting featured the participation of Dr. Alessandra Rodrigues Gomes, Technologist at Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and a researcher involved in the partnership between the Institute and ACTO, as well as Sandra Berman, representative of the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL) Program for the Eastern Brazilian Amazon. On the day following the session, a field activity was held at EMBRAPA Eastern Amazon, with the support of the CaucusBrasil Institute (ICB) and the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL) Program, which is implemented through international technical cooperation among Brazil, Peru, and Colombia with the World Bank, in partnership with the International Conservation Caucus Foundation (ICCF).
