This document presents the main initiatives led by Senator Nelsinho Trad as President of the Amazon Parliament (PARLAMAZ) between 2022 and 2024, with a focus on strengthening cooperation among the Amazonian countries and promoting the sustainable development of the region.
Key achievements include the reactivation and institutionalization of PARLAMAZ alongside the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), political coordination to consolidate a regional agenda dedicated to the preservation of the Amazon, the promotion of the bioeconomy and sustainable production models, as well as participation in international forums and high-level meetings, including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Amazon Summit, and the FAO World Food Forum. The document also highlights technical visits to successful sustainable management initiatives in Colombia and Brazil, including agroforestry systems, peach palm (chontaduro) production, pirarucu management, and agroforestry cooperatives, emphasizing their potential to generate income, conserve the environment, and strengthen local communities.
Finally, it underscores the need to expand international cooperation to address shared challenges such as deforestation, illegal mining, drug trafficking, poverty, and food insecurity, advocating for more integrated regional governance for the Amazon.
